Plan a retaining wall around the ground it needs to hold

A retaining-wall enquiry needs the position, levels and intended result. Send views of the whole area so the proposed work can be assessed in context.

Curved garden steps and raised planting

Show both sides of the level change

Photograph the area from safe positions and explain whether a wall is being added, replaced or considered as part of a wider garden change. Tell us about paths, steps, paving or boundaries beside it. Retaining walls are part of our landscaping service, but the actual proposal determines the preparation, materials and any specialist input needed. We do not quote from a wall length alone when the levels and surrounding ground remain unclear.

Planning should address foundations, wall materials, backfill, drainage and how the structure meets existing features. A leaning or cracked existing wall may present a hazard and should be assessed rather than simply covered or patched. Access for excavation and material handling also affects which construction options are practical.

What we assess

Assess retained ground

Identify the height, soil and nearby loads, with particular attention to water and existing structures that could influence stability.

Confirm the design

Agree the responsible designer, necessary calculations and construction specification before selecting a finish or committing to installation.

Coordinate drainage and finish

Define drainage, backfill, coping and adjoining surfaces so the wall functions as part of the complete level-change scheme.

What to send us

Send your postcode, photos from both sides where safe, rough length and the difference in ground height. Include nearby buildings, parking, trees and boundary ownership information. Explain whether the wall is new or replaces an existing structure. The quotation separates design, demolition, excavation, materials and reinstatement. Final dimensions and any necessary permissions must be confirmed before work is agreed.

What is separate

Boundary disputes, specialist engineering and extensive underpinning are not assumed included. Ordinary garden brickwork and decorative walls belong in the property-services brickwork scope when they are not retaining ground.

✦ BEFORE YOU BOOK

Garden Retaining Walls questions.

Is a retaining wall the same as a garden wall?+

No. Retaining ground creates structural demands that must be assessed; a decorative wall may have a different design and scope.

Will I need an engineer?+

That depends on height, loads and site conditions. The responsible design arrangements must be established before construction is committed.

Can you repair a leaning wall?+

Send photos without approaching an unsafe structure. An assessment is needed to determine whether repair is appropriate or replacement should be considered.

Does the wall need drainage?+

Water behind retained ground can affect stability. The design must address drainage rather than relying only on the visible wall finish.

Can steps be included in the scheme?+

Yes, discuss the whole level change. Steps, landings and retaining edges need coordinated dimensions and a defined construction scope.

Your postcode and current photos help define the scope before we agree a quotation and appointment.
