A hedge is part of how you use the garden: it can frame a lawn, screen a sitting area or narrow a path when new growth spreads. Before booking hedge trimming in London, decide what you want the visit to achieve and show the conditions as they are. This guide helps you prepare the shape, access and clear-up brief without guessing the time or promising the same treatment for every hedge.
Choose the finish you want
A hedge can need attention without needing a major change. You may want a straight top, a softer outline, less growth over a path or a tidy that fits around established plants. Start by describing that result. A photograph and a short note about the problem are more useful than asking for a standard cut when the amount of growth is unclear.
Our hedge trimming services cover the routine trimming and shaping agreed in your quotation. Point out the plants you want kept and any sections you would like assessed separately. A hedge beside a weak fence or tangled with ivy needs a closer look before the work is recommended. Do not assume a light trim will resolve damage to the boundary underneath.
Show the whole hedge and access route
Take a wide photograph of the full length, then a closer view of the growth that needs attention. If the hedge turns a corner, show the return as well. A rough length and height can help explain the space, but please say if they are estimates. There is no need to climb, lean over a boundary or push into dense vegetation to collect measurements.
Include the route from the street to the hedge: the gate, side passage, steps and any narrow opening. Tell us whether access is through the house and whether the other side can be reached with permission. Pots, garden furniture and planting beside the hedge can affect the working space. Leave them where they are for the photographs so the enquiry shows the conditions accurately.
Check for active nests before work
Timing needs more care than choosing a date on the calendar. In England, wild birds, their eggs and active nests have legal protection. Intentionally damaging or destroying a nest while it is being used or built is an offence. Some species have additional protection against disturbance. Cutting hedges and other vegetation can affect birds, so checks and the timing of work matter.
If birds appear to be nesting, leave the area undisturbed and raise it before arranging a cut. An apparently quiet hedge is not proof that it is clear. Do not move a nest or cut around it in the hope of continuing the job. Work should be postponed or reassessed where an active nest could be affected. There is no calendar date that makes every hedge automatically safe to cut. Read the official guidance linked below when planning the visit.
Agree what happens to the cuttings
A hedge trim produces clippings, and a clear quotation should say what happens to them. We gather the clippings and sweep garden paths as part of the agreed hedge work. Taking green waste away is a separate charge. Tell us whether you want collection or whether there is an agreed place on the property for the cuttings to remain.
For routine hedge trimming within garden maintenance, the price is 65 pounds per hour. No VAT added. Minimum booking 1 hour. The charging basis, hours and team size are confirmed in your written quotation. The time needed depends on the agreed work and access; the length of the hedge alone does not settle it. Ask about any extra work before booking so the quotation can distinguish it from the routine trim.
Send useful photos for an estimate
Put your full job postcode, the photographs and your priorities into the enquiry. Say whether you want a one-off hedge tidy or would like hedge care included with regular maintenance. If mowing, weeding or suitable shrub pruning also needs attention, list those tasks in order of importance rather than assuming they will fit into the same visit.
Our gardening tools do not need a power or water connection from you. We still need a clear understanding of access and the work area. After reviewing the photographs or assessing the garden, we agree the scope and estimated hours before booking. Additional work is discussed before it goes ahead. Start with the hedge-trimming page for service details, the garden-maintenance page for combined routine tasks, or the garden-waste page to discuss collection.
